(born 1962, Guangzhou) makes art about the city. He has lived through Southern China¡¯s massive economic transition of the past two decades. Since 2002, his work has focused on urban change and its effect on human subjectivity. Cities, landscapes, people and time permeate his works; through them he explores questions of individual existence, collective politics, and the relation between the two. Chen Shaoxiong belongs to China¡¯s early generation of conceptual artists, and was a member of the Big Tail Elephant group. He participated in ¡°Cities on the Move¡± in 1997, as well as the 2003 Venice Biennale, 2004 Shanghai Biennale, and 2005 Guangzhou Triennial.
