A showcase of Liu Ding’s latest work featuring 10 light boxes and the artist’s specially designed ‘wallpaper’. The flock designs recall both a sentiment of luxury garnered from their original status as a product used by the wealthy in grand apartments, while similarly referencing their inherently kitsch nature and decline into cliché. Such ‘wallpaper’ is now more commonly seen as cheap decoration in restaurants, hotels and pubs, where it is intended to evoke an atmosphere of antiquated grandeur.
Embedded within these rich, patterned surfaces Liu Ding has written provocative statements which undermine and attack the bourgeois nature of the designs. Like subversive graffiti scribbled on walls and street corners, these brief outcries represent a sly affirmation of contemporary counter-culture |
