Liu Ding’s solo exhibition at UniversalStudios features an impressive new installation which he further examines themes of power, desire, and the deceptive lines drawn between imagination and reality.

Situated in the centre of the space, the work is composed of overlapping concrete beams stacked into an imposing mountain. Standing over ten-meters wide and six-meters high, like the skyscrapers and other modern monoliths that it evokes, it is at once a representation of man’s desire and the need to transform this desire into a physical (concrete) form. At the base of the structure, half a tiger skin is seen protruding from beneath the beams. Partly inspired by the poetry of Jorge Louis Borges, the tiger is used both as a potent symbol of power and physicality.Borges’ interest in the tiger stems from the disparity between the real object and that which is a product of artistic creation and imagination imbued with its own meanings and complex connotations.

Through the use of black lights the sprayed white concrete beams and walls emit an almost angelic, incandescent glow which appears to belie their original weight and structure. It simultaneously imbues the space with a meditative, dreamlike quality that amplifies the illusory aspect of the installation and forces us to question our perception of what we are viewing.

The entire work is reflected in a nearly floor to ceiling mirror installed on the rear wall of the space, creating what would seem to be a portal into another world while at the same time playing with the viewer’s sense of created space and (reflected) reality. Like Borges’ tigers, we are left to wonder in a labyrinth of our own perceptions and imagination.
